Congratulations to Mark Wheeler and crew of the Mikelson 43 Sportfisher "La Dulce Vida" for winning the 16th Annual Mikelson Yachts Catalina Classic Marlin Tournament, the Richest West Coast Billfish Tournament. The event was a huge success with perfect weather and simply outstanding fishing. Both Day-1 and Day-2 of the tournament saw huge numbers of striped marlin in a very concentrated area on the west side of Catalina Island.
With (48) boats in the tournament, Day-1 saw over (30) marlin caught & released with several boated which were above the qualifying length and weight. Day-2 posted even larger numbers with over (40) marlin caught & released and even more qualifying fish brought to the scales. Some called it the best marlin fishing they'd ever seen around Catalina Island.
"La Dulce Vida", the Mikelson 43 Sportfisher owned & captained by Mark Wheeler, caught the winner on Day-2 of the event. The striped marlin taped out at 97 inches long and weighed in at 206 pounds. The angler responsible for this impressive winning marlin was Randy Bixler.
This is the 3rd Mikelson Victory in the Catalina Classic, as the Mikelson 43 “Fintastic II” won in 2001 and the Mikelson 75 SF, “After Midnight” took top honors in 2003. “La Dulce Vida” also placed 2nd in the tournament in 2004.
Overall, the Mikelson Yachts Catalina Classic could not have been a bigger success and the action on the water could not have been more exciting.
Mikelsons participating in this year's Classic included:
"La Dulce Vida" - Mikelson 43 SF
"Fish Tank" - Mikelson 43 SF
"La Patrona" - Mikelson 50 SF
"Exta Sea" - Mikelson 50 SF
"Really Hooked III" - Mikelson 57 SF
"Goin Deep" - Mikelson 61 SF
"Andale Andale" - Mikelson 70 SF
"After Midnight" - Mikelson 75 SF
A great big "Thank You" goes out to all the tournament sponsors and to Rod Halperin and his crew at Catalina Tournaments for putting on such a successful event. The Mikelson Yachts Catalina Classic will return to Avalon on Santa Catalina Island next year for even more incredible fishing.
